Mrs. Hawk's death came after an illness lasting over a period of two months, following a fall received in the early autumn, while visiting at the home of her son, John C. Hawk, near Saltville, Va. Following a period in the hospital at Saltville, she was removed to the home of her daughter here, where she had been since.
The deceased was one of the best known and beloved women of Sullivan county and section. Her family has branched into various activities and all its members have become known through associations with the religious and business world.
She was born December 1, 1850, and in early childhood united with the Methodist Church at Aikin's Chapel. She was married to W. I. Hawk on September 24, 1868. To this union were born nine children, two dying early in life. The remaining seven, three daughters and four sons, are as follows: Mrs. N. K. Doane, of Kingsport; Mrs. J. W. Deakins and Mrs. E. F. Barnes, of near Holston Institute; John C. Hawk, missionary, Harbin, China; Carlock Hawk, minister, Wadesboro, N. C.; French Hawk, lawyer, Whitesburg, Ky.; Atkins Hawk, real estate dealer, Kingsport. All surviving children were at her bedside when the end came yesterday.
Three brothers and one sister survive as follows: John W. Morrell, J. D. Morrell and S. R. Morrell, and Mrs. N. Slaughter, also 14 grandchildren.
Throughout her life she was a devoted mother and neighbor, always bearing her pain in quietness and never complained. She will be greatly missed by the scores of friends and relatives in this section.
