Jacob Sumney was the sixth of seven children born to Isaac and Christiana Stiverson Sumney of Westmoreland County, PA.

He married Mary Jane Irwin about 1860, and they together had eight known children: Mary, Christina, Sarah Lavina, Braden Samuel, Rebecca, Hugh Isaac, Jacob Edward and William J. Sumney.

Jacob and Mary Jane spent their entire married lives living in the Butler County, Pennsylvania area. Jacob died one year after his last child, William, was born.

According to the 1880 census records, he was a farm laborer.
