Jacob served as a private with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G (Civil War). He became an ordained Methodist minister.

The son of Andrew & Margery (Miller) Comp, in 1850 he lived with his farming family in Juniata Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census but by 1864 was working as a teacher. At adulthood, he stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and gray eyes. He apparently never married.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
