OBITUARY, The Correctionville News, 7 September 1944, page 1: With the passing of Mr. Ashmore another old pioneer has been taken from the community. Carroll Omar Ashmore, son of Carroll Omar and Sarah Ashmore, was born in Iowa Co., Wisconsin, on July 5, 1859, and the death Angel came to relieve him from his suffering Monday morning, August 28, 1944, at his home in Correctionville. He had reached the ripe old age of 85 years, 1 month and 23 days.
He was the youngest of a family of eight children, having four sisters and three brothers, all of whom with his parents have preceded him in death.
At an early age he moved with his parents to Fayette Co., Iowa, living there three years, then moved to Kansas. When a lad of 16 his parents moved back to Iowa. In the spring of 1880, when a young man of 21, he and his parents moved to a farm in Woodbury Co., Iowa, and for the remaining sixty-four years of his life he has lived in this county.
On December 31, 1887, he was united in marriage to Jennie Coon at Sac City, Iowa. To this union five children were born, namely Clifford, Howard, Fred and Mrs. Ruth Lahann, all of Correctionville, and Mrs. Bessie Lahann of Cushing, all of whom with his good wife are left to mourn his departure.
He and his wife retired from farming and moved to Correctionville in 1920, where he has resided ever since. He became converted at services held in Rock Center schoolhouse in 1894 by Rev. S.H. Streyfeller visiting with the Evangelical church at the time. He has been a very devoted and active worker in the church ever since, holding many various offices in that organization just as long as his health would permit. When he could no longer attend church services his bible was his best friend. He was always a good reader and scholar.
Mr. Ashmore was held in high esteem by his innumerable circle of friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father and was a friend in need at all times. He was a patient sufferer. He lived a full Christian life.
He leaves to mourn his loss his widow Jennie; three sons and two daughters and eleven grandchildren: Craig Ashmore, James Ashmore, Mrs. Carol Madsen, Mrs. Arlene Bollmeyer, Mrs. Phyllis Hansen, Mrs. Wanda Jacobs, all of Correctionville, Mrs. Betty Hunwardsen of Cushing, Sgt. Glenn Ashmore of Camp Farenin, Texas, Mrs. Wilma Reed of San Francisco, California, Mrs. Dorothy Seavey of Sioux City; also six great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30, and at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. J.S. Deedrick of Waterloo and Rev. Streyfeller of LeMars. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
Pallbearers were Henry Camarigg, Eli Walrod, Dick Galvin, Fred Holcomb, Merlin Heath and Andy Trimble. Mrs. W.H. Thompson of Sioux City sang "Where We'll Never Grow Old" and "Good Night Here and Good Morning There," accompanied by Mrs. Jess Frost at the piano. Bud Madison arranged for the cars.
