Harriet M. Barnes, 97, of Torch Lake Village, died Thurs., May 22, 1997, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Mrs. Barnes was born May 16,1900, in South Milton Township, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (LaCross) Bussa. She resided in Torch Lake Township all of her life.
She graduated from Elk Rapids High School in 1918. She was the last living person of her generation in the Torch Lake area and one of the last living one-room country school teachers, having taught in the early 1920s in the Williamsburg and East Jordan areas, and also at the Cresswell School.
She loved vegetable and flower gardening and was well known as an excellent cook. She was a member of the Elk Rapids Eastern Star #326. She had served as Torch Lake Township Clerk at one time.
In 1923, she married Albert Barnes, who preceded her in death in 1980.
Also preceding her in death were son Bryce in 1989, grandson Tim Barnes, granddaughter Barbara Lou Barnes, great-granddaughter Nicole Nemec and six brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are son Dale (Norma) Barnes of Torch Lake Village, daughter Gloria (Frank) Nemec of Elk Rapids, daughter-in-law Caroline Barnes of Boyne City, sisters Velma Goodman of Elk Rapids and Lyda Hunt of Traverse City, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held May 24 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, the Rev. Harold Kruse officiating.
Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
