Sarah Abaloha Ladd, the daughter of R.T. Ladd, was born in Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa, on November 21, 1861. The date and circumstances of Sadie's move to Missouri are unknown. In June 1880, when she was 18 years old, she lived with the Timothy Clark family in Granby, MO. By this time she was skilled enough to give organ lessons and earn a little money.
She married William Bell on November 19, 1880, in Newtonia. In January 1891, after farming and herding cattle for many years, he had saved up enough money to buy a farm near his parents.
She and Will were active members of the Newtonia Baptist Church. They were known for their musical talents (Will played a fiddle) and enjoyed playing at various social functions. Sometimes they entertained at home.

August Ice Cream Supper
On a pleasant summer evening, Friday, August 18, 1899, Will and Sadie gave an ice cream supper at their home. A description of the event was published in the news the following week: "Mr. and Mrs. Will Bell gave an ice cream supper at their residence northeast of town last Friday evening. There was quite an extended invitation and a large crowd of young people and married people were present. The tables were placed on the lawn and decorated with flowers. There was music on the organ and violin and also vocal music. The lawn was nicely lighted up and seats comfortably arranged over the grounds. It was a perfect moonlight night and the air balmy and pleasant. Everybody present greatly enjoyed the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Bell are excellent entertainers and did much to make the evening a pleasant one."
The following is my description of Sadie from "The Family of James and Caroline Bell" (page 211)
"Sadie was held in high esteem by everyone who knew her. She could best be described as an attractive, pleasant, and warmhearted woman with the attributes of an ideal wife, mother, friend, and neighbor. Not only was she beautiful on the inside, but on the outside as well, being well groomed and attractively dressed. Her children were her pride and joy. When she wasn't busy with everyday household duties, she helped with menial chores around the farm. There were also occasional committees to serve on to help raise money for the church, and she never refused to give a helping hand. She also kept busy in other types of community activities."
Over the years Sadie gave birth to nine children, but only four grew to adulthood. She contracted tuberculosis, and they moved to CO in the spring of 1914. She died on April 14, 1915, at the age of 53 years, 4 months, and 23 days.
Sadie's body was transported back to Newtonia by railroad. Her funeral was held in the Newtonia Baptist Church on Sunday, April 18, after which she was buried in the old Newtonia Cemetery.
News about her death was published on page one in The Granby Missourian on April 23, 1915: "Mountain Grove - Several from here attended the funeral of Mrs. Sadie Bell at Newtonia last Sunday. It will no doubt be remembered that the family left one year ago for Colorado for her health, and we believe it prolonged helping her for a longer time. But she passed away April 14, 1915. Her body was brought here for burial. She was a noble Christian lady and we believe all her old neighbors here would join voices together and say ‘we truly loved her.' We extend our sympathy to the lonely family in the far west."
