Marion Clarke Crandall was one of 8 sons of Joseph and Mary Clarke Crandall, 7 of whom provided service to the US Army. In the 1820's the Crandall family was located in Watson, Lewis co Ny , but by 1837 were located in Medina co Oh. Later, the family moved to Jefferson co Wi , and as adults some members moved to Blue Earth co Mn. MARION entered the military on the side of the Union, the 11th Minn Infantry.
Then  Mustered in to Co. A, 5th Iowa Cavalry, August 29, 1861 and discharged for disability on May 4, 1862. Joined Read's Co. Minnesota Citizen Soldiers September 20, 1862, and was discharged October 17, 1862 the same day he was listed as a member of Co. B, 1st Minnesota Cavalry. Promoted sergeant, the same day. Discharged November 9, 1863. Joined Co. H, 11th Minnesota Infantry as sergeant, August 14, 1864 and mustered out on June 26, 1865.
