Bernard Griffith passed away on April 7, 2011, at The Peridot retirement home in Prescott, Ariz. Bernard was born on Oct. 31, 1919, in Bristol, N.H., one of nine children born to J. Earl and Myrtle Griffith.
Bernard was married to his wife Marilyn for 69 years when she passed away on Nov. 5, 2010, in Prescott, Ariz. They were long time residents of Prescott.
Bernard proudly served over 35 years in the United States Marine Corps, which included WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant and received the National Defense Service medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with device Good Conduct medal, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge(s), Certificate of Commendation Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Commendation Medal.
He always did his job well, whether in the military or supporting and being the backbone of his family.
Bernard is survived by his two twin daughters, Sharon Stewart-Wells of Ruidoso, N.M. and Karen Shultz (Earl) of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; two grandchildren, Mardel Szambelan (Joseph) of Seattle, Wash., and Garon Shultz of Portland, Ore.; as well as two great grandchildren, Leah and Carter Szambelan of Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by his two sisters, Genevieve and Gloria.
A family service will be Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Prescott National Cemetery with full military honors. The Bishop Dennis Massey presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs at www.tenderlovingcanines.org.
