Richard Vincent Barry was born in Marcus, Iowa to John and Teresa (Prosser) Barry on June 19, 1929. He grew up on the family farm west of Marcus. He graduated from Holy Name Catholic High School of Marcus in 1948. As a youth, he was quiet and studious, and he always had his nose in a book. He frequently tinkered with farm machinery and became proficient at repairing anything. He lost his mother at the age of 19.

Dick attended Creighton University and earned his pre-medical degree. He earned his M.D. degree from Creighton University College of Medicine in 1957.

He married his first love, Joan G. Wilberding in 1953. They had four children: Debra (Barry) Mostek, Richard Barry, Jr., Diane (Barry) Denkinger, and Sean Barry.

During his last year of Internal Medicine residency, Dick developed a severe viral illness that caused inflammation of his heart and liver and was bed bound for a year. It took several years of recuperation before he was able to resume practicing medicine. Joan died of breast cancer in 1972.

In 1980, he married his beloved wife of 28 years, Patty (McGuire) Barry, who was a nursing school classmate and friend of Joan's; and Dick became a loving father to Timothy McGuire, Molly (McGuire Rusley) Thompson, Matthew McGuire, Shaun McGuire and Dennis McGuire.

Later in his medical career, he practiced Occupational Medicine and was Medical Director at Lucent Technologies in Omaha.

His interest extended well beyond medicine. He was avid seeker of knowledge in numerous fields including mechanical, electrical, astronomy, and gardening. He was a perfectionist, especially with his woodworking hobby. Dick was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Dick was a head strong man, but very loving. The kids always knew if they told him something was broken, he would fix it himself immediately.

Dick's quote on marriage: "Marriage may be made in Heaven, but the maintenance is all done here on earth." Dick said, "I had the good fortune of marrying two wonderful women."
