Lewis served during the Civil War as a Corporal with Company B, 156th Illinois, Infantry (rank and unit provided by Elaine Lindoo). On December 21, 1870, in Aurora, Illinois, Lewis married Flora Slater. Lewis and Flora had children: Walter, Hattie, May, Clark, and Edith.
Lewis' obit as it appeared in the Chicago Tribune, October 23, 1935 (contributed by Lisa Gerald):
Lewis Wilder, 92 years old, a native born resident of Aurora, died yesterday in his home at 65 Southview Street following a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Wilder was a brother of Bert Wilder, Aurora's oldest resident, who observed his 100th birthday anniversary last July 26. The Wilder family came to Aurora 98 years ago from New York. Lewis Wilder was born in a log cabin on the west side of the Fox river when friendly Fox Indians roamed the area and their chief, Waubonsie, was a welcome visitor in the homes of the settlers of that period. Mr. Wilder was a Civil War veteran. Mrs. Edith Mombleau and Mrs. Mae Honey, daughters, and two grandchildren are among his survivors. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning in the chapel at 213 North Lake street, Aurora. Interment will be in West Aurora cemetery.
