Mary Elizabeth Dugas, daughter of Dr. Louis Alexander Dugas and the former Mary Catherine Barnes, was born on the 23rd of December 1833 in Augusta, Georgia. Mary Elizabeth did not know her mother, as she died eight days after her birth. But her father, Dr. Dugas was a loving and respected doctor throughout the country.
In March of 1840, Mary Elizabeth's father married the former Miss Lousia Virginia Harris; who would rise her as a daughter. Over the next several years, Mary Elizabeth would have seven brothers and sisters.
On April 23rd 1857, Mary Elizabeth married a young doctor, William Joseph Holt, son of William White Holt and the former Miss Mary Arinton Ware; uniting two prominent families of Augusta. Mary Elizabeth and William would have four children.
After the Civil War around 1866, Mary Elizabeth and Dr. Holt would move to Montgomery, Alabama to raise their growing family.
Mary Elizabeth Dugas Holt departed this life on the 28th day of August 1894 at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 5 days. After being a widow for 13 years, Mary Elizabeth was laid to rest in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery beside her husband of 41 years and her two sons, Louis and William, who preceded her to the grave.
