Henry served as a private with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G (Civil War).

The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Detrich) Charles, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 9, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He married Permelia Potter August 15, 1867, in Buffalo Township, Perry County, and fathered Mary N. (b. @1869), Jesse E. (b. @1871), Addie E. (b. @1873), and Lewis P. (b. @1877).
