Birth: Jul., 1827
Columbia County
New York, USA
Death: Nov. 10, 1881
Berkshire County
Massachusetts, USA

Mary E. ACKERT was born either c. 1817 (calculated from death certificate and death register) or c. 1827-1828 (1860, 1870, 1880 censuses and tombstone). The birth years of her siblings also point to her having been born in 1827. She was said to have been the daughter of John and Sarah ACKERT, and to have been born in (Chatham?) Columbia County, New York.

She first married James W. ASCHA (sometimes also spelled ASKEY), of White Creek, New York, on 8 September 1844 in Bennington (Bennington Co.), Vermont. In Bennington they had three children: Charles G. ASCHA (1845-1915); William Henry ASCHA (1846-1930; he was adopted and changed his name to Orlando William PALMER); and a daughter named Eveline Cordelia (or Evelyn C., Elvia A., or Elva A. or Eveline) (b. c.1848-1850) who would take the surname of STONE from her stepfather; at the time of the 1870 census she worked in a shoe factory in Peru, Mass.

James W. Ascha and Mary were divorced. She then married Ward N. STONE of Worthington, Massachusetts on 1 January 1854 in Worthington (Hampshire Co.). They settled in Peru, Massachusetts where Ward was a farmer. In addition to her three children, they had three sons together: Edwin Bosworth STONE (1858-1946), John Burdick STONE (1863-1932), and Walter Lincoln STONE (1865-1905), all born in Peru.

According to the Berkshire County Eagle (Pittsfield, Mass.), published Thursday, November 17, 1881:

"Mary A., wife of Ward N. Stone of Peru, died Novemder [sic] 10, from the effects of a paralytic shock. She was getting dinner when suddenly the fit seized her and she fell, striking the stove in her fall. She was found lying upon the floor unable to move and scarcely [able] to speak, and died in four hours."

According to her tombstone inscription ("Tombstone Inscriptions of Peru, Massachusetts," Lederer & Granger, 1948), she was 54 years and 4 months old, when she died, yielding a calculated birthdate of July 1827. According to the death record filed in Peru on 11 February 1882, she was 64 years and 3 months old when she died of apoplexy, yielding a calculated birthdate of August 1817.
