Fred was the beloved son of Charles De Hass Benson and Anna Laura Newland.
He was the dear brother of Esther, Vesta, Edna, and Dean.

CHARLES "FRED" BENSON, FORMER POLICE CHIEF, DIES
Retired Bellingham police chief Charles "Fred" Benson, 85, 3618 Lakeway Drive, died Monday.
He was born Jan. 19, 1897 in Moscow, Idaho and had been a local resident since 1924. He joined the Bellingham Police Department May 22, 1925, and retired June 30, 1950.
He married Luceal Hinkle June 6, 1929. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He was a World War I Navy veteran and a member of American Legion, Albert J. Hamilton, Post 7. He also was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Retired Police Officers Association, and Commercial Travellers.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, seven grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
Funeral services will be a 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, the Rev. Richard D. Talley officiating. Arrangements are by Westford Funeral Home.
