Nicholas Barnhart came to the United States from Mainz, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany on the ship Bark Frederick from Belgium and arrived in New York on July 27, 1843. His parents were Jacob and Barbary Bernhard (later changed to Barnhart). Siblings were Peter, Caroline, John Philip and George. Nicholas married Catherine Frances Keller on January 1, 1865 in Scioto County, Ohio. Catherine had also come to this country from Baveria, Germany with her family in 1843. Nicholas was a farmer, a tinner and a Civil War soldier. From Rick Banks
