J. MARVIN STRICKLAND, CONSERVATIONIST, DIES J. Marvin Strickland, 77, conservationist and civic worker, died Thursday afternoon in Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He served for 30 years as district conservation supervisor and also as board chairman of the eight-county Satilla River Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a former president of the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts and council member of the National Association of Conservation Districts. From 1960 to 1971 he was assistant director of marketing for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. During World War II, he was regional representative for the Office of Defense Transportation. A native of Ware County, he attended public school in Brantley County and was graduated from Berry Junior College and Georgia Southern College. He began his career as a teacher, principal and superintendent in the Brantley County schools, and also served as a state senator. He later was treasurer of an interstate truck freight line and had interests in farming, naval stores, an equipment dealership, motels, pulpwood and contracting for earth moving. In Waycross, he served as president of the board of the Rehabilitation Workshop, chairman of United Way, a founder of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, and as school poster contest chairman of the Forest Festival for many years. He received the Georgia Sportsman Federation Award in 1960 and the Baynard Knight Cup for community work in 1975 from the Waycross Kiwanis Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and as scoutmaster of the Boy Scout troop. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florris Woodard Strickland, Waycross; four sisters, Mrs. J. K. East, Columbia, S.C., Mrs. T. L. Gallman, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mrs. John Snare, Gainesville, Ga., Mrs. Hal Crawford, Chamblee; six brothers, Edwin Strickland, Waycross, Quillian Strickland, Mesa, Calif., Harold Strickland, Nahunta, Barney Strickland, Columbia, S.C., Ruben Strickland, Huntsville, Ala., and Arthur Strickland, Washinton, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Mincy-Fulford Funeral Home.
