GWH was killed in fighting near Petersburg just weeks before the Confederate Army gave up their position at the siege of Petersburg.

From the Rockingham Register and Advertiser, 10 February 1865----

Lt. Col. George Huston of the 33rd Va. Infantry, was killed near Petersburg, on Monday evening the 6th of February, about 5 o'clock whilst gallantly leading his men into action against the enemies of his country. Col. HUSTON was a native of Rockingham county, Va.,and has a family residing in Harrisonburg. He perished in the very prime and vigor of his manhood, having just reached the 35th year of his age. His remains reached Harrisonburg on Wednesday morning and were interred in Woodbine Cemetery on Thursday.
