SSgt Robert Barker was assigned to the 12th Air Force as a radio operator. On August 5, 1943, he along with Pilot: Bob McNab, Co-pilot: Bill Badgerow, Navigator: Melvin Bebee, Bombardier: Bill Luke, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Dave Keene, Gunner: Harry Ahrens, Gunner: Joe Wyrwas, Gunner: Harry Noble, and Tail gunner: George Klapp, were flying Bomber #42-30468 (which was designated for Mediterranean Theater of Operation) from Gander, Newfoundland to RAF Nutts Corner, Northern Ireland. Near the end of their flight and for an unknown reason, the crew ditched off Berwick, Northumberland, in the North Sea. A RAF HSL or High Speed launch found the plane still afloat but there was no sign of survivors. The crew of the HSL attempted without success to tow the aircraft to land. (Missing Air Crew Report 163).
