H.A. "Buck" Phelps, 72, Waurika native, died Wed. Dec 2, 1992, in the Jefferson Co. Hospital at Waurika after a sudden illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday Dec 4, 1992 in the First Baptist Church in Waurika. The Rev. Mike Smith officiated. Burial was in the Waurika Cem. under the direction of the Willis C. Worley Funeral Home, Waurika. Homer Alton "Buck" Phelps was born Jan. 30, 1920. in Waurika. He was the seventh of eight children born to William and Betty Phelps. He grew up on the family farm and attended schools in Waurika. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his discharge from the service, the couple farmed east of Waurika for about 10 years before he began working for the State of Oklahoma Highway Dept. in 1956. He retired in 1982. Mr. Phelps was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Waurika and he was a member of the Timothy Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Nita of the home north of Waurika; two daughters, Linda Rich of Olney, Tx. and Barbara Kirkland of Duncan; a brother, R.W. "Willie" Phelps of Waurika; two sisters, Claudia Guy and Letha Sumpter, both of Waurika; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Leo Liggett, Gene Elkins, Johnny Phelps, Donnie Watkins, Sam Countiss, Dale Plant, Don Phelps and Bruce Stanley. The family suggests that memorials be given to the Heart Fund or to the Jefferson County Hospital.
