Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008, in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with the Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.
Mr. Askins was born on September 28, 1913, in Lakewood, Illinois, the son of Oliver Clinton and Emma Giberson Askins.
He graduated from Heyworth High School in the Class of 1931. He was a welder for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville and played on the Oliver Softball Team. He later was a custodian at Moulton Junior High School in Shelbyville until his retirement. Harold was a former member of the Moulton United Methodist Church and the Free Methodist Church, both of Shelbyville. He was an avid coonhunter.
He married Jennie Hackney Robertson on December 30, 1939. She died on June 14, 2000.
Surviving are his step-daughter, Dolores J. Donald and husband, David, of Shelbyville; step-daughter-in-law, Doris Robertson of Westervelt; sister, Lena Hocq of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jennie; step-son, Bobbie L. Robertson; brothers: Willie and Warren Askins; sisters: Rohima Minks, Edith Law, Eva Allen, Lenore Schlosser and Bernadine Fulford; and four grandchildren.
