Edward H. Brown, the son of Susan T. (Knowles) and Frederick Avery Brown was born in 1849 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. In 1860, the family was living in Goshen, Muscatine, Iowa.

In 1876, Ed was united in marriage to Juliette A. (Griffin) Mullock, widow of Doctor Watkins Mullock. Also joining their union was her son Warren Mullock, about 3 years old. (Juliette and Mr. Mullock had an older son James, but he might have died before Juliette's marriage to Mr. Brown).

Ed and Juliette became the parents of 8 more children: Iva Mae Brown, 1879-1908; Admiral Van Buren "BUD" Brown, 1881-1958 [Find A Grave Memorial #39075986]; Edna Mae "Sissy" Brown, 1883-1901; Flora Flossie Brown, 1886-1945 [Find A Grave Memorial# 33448159]; Archie A. Brown, 1888-1964[Find A Grave Memorial# 35868524]; Floyd Brown, 1890-1896; Goldie Pearl Brown, 1893-1977; and Ruby R. Brown 1896-1978[Find A Grave Memorial# 35868485].

Their residence was in Benton Township, Fremont County, Iowa. In 1885, the Iowa Census has Juliette's father James B. Griffin and her brother Orville a. Griffin also living with them, as her mother Harriet (Sharp) Griffin had recently died.
[Info contributed by Julie Grabill Rasmussen (#47927883)]

In the US 1880 Census, Ed worked as Farm Laborer. In 1885, he worked on the railroad.

Ed was the local River Runner. He was one of the people who transported others and the mail over the Missouri before the bridge was built.
After the bridge was built Ed had no work and apparently didn't adapt. When he died of pneumonia along with daughter Edna Mae Brown, it was because the family had no resources and where living on the river in an 8x8 houseboat.
The local newspaper admonished readers for not coming to the aid of the family in their time of need.
