Clay D. Bailey
Opelika, Alabama

Clay D. Bailey, 74, formerly of Godfrey, died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home in Alabama.
Clay was a resident of Godfrey until five years ago when he moved to Alabama. born October 3, 1934, in Alton, he was the son of George F. and M. Irene (Henderson) Bailey.
He served in the U.S. Navy (construction battalion) from 1953 to 1957 and again from 1962 to 1964. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1308 (Alton). He retired from St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton as an electrical engineer.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doreen Bailey; a son, Curt Bailey and his wife, Marsha, of Alabama; a grandson, Jeff, and a granddaughter, Julia; six great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew and their families; and three sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George E. and Rodney L. Bailey.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the noon funeral service Wednesday, May 27 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by VFW Post #1308.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

NOTE: Clay was the brother-in-law to Winnifred "Winnie" Bailey, who I take care of at Fountains IV in Godfrey, an Independent and Assisted Living facility for seniors. She was married to Clay's brother.
