Alice Major Purcell was born in Danville, Illinois on 20 April 1890. At the time of her birth, her father was a major in the Illinois National Guard. Hence the middle name of "Major". She was raised in east central Illinois. Her father was, for a brief time, the proprietor of the Columbian Hotel in Urbana (1893-1895). The family then moved back to Danville and, from there, they moved to Decatur, Illinois. Alice graduated from high school in Decatur in 1908. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
By 1910, Alice was employed by the Green Bay Press Gazette as a proofreader. When she married Roy James Allen in 1919, she was the society page editor for the Press Gazette. Alice and Roy had one child, Henry Robert, and lived in Green Bay for most of their married life. After Alice left the Green Bay Press Gazette, she was active in the Christ Episcopal Church, in Green Bay, for many years. She did much of the book work there, along with other tasks.
Alice's mother, Emma Purcell, also lived with the family until her death in 1953. Their primary residence was 205 North Van Buren. Her husband, Roy, died from tuberculosis in 1949 and Alice remained at 205 North Van Buren, until the mid 1970s, when she moved to Escanaba, Michigan. It was not a move she wanted to make, but as she was in her mid-80s and still living alone, it was better for her to be closer to family and her son was in Escanaba. Alice lived there until her death on 5 May 1987, at the age of 97.
