Obituary: EX-PLOWBOY COACH DIES AT AMARILLO HOME
Arthur B. Hays, former teacher and football coach in Tarleton, died at his home in Amarillo on October 23. Long remembered by his many friends in Tarleton and Stephenville, Mr. Hays was widely known for his ability as both teacher and coach. Tarleton's athletic field is named for him. He left Tarleton in 1921 and taught in the Amarillo schools from 1924 until the time of his death.
John Winters, originally from Stephenville and now head of the State Department of Public Welfare, said Mr. Hays was one of the best coaches Tarleton ever had. He developed several sinning teams at the school and won wide recognition for his victories over four-year colleges. Mr. Winters played football at Tarleton under Mr. Hays. "I don't think I've ever seen a coach who could get along so well with the boys as could Mr. Hays," Mr. Winters said. "And he was a champion of clean sportsmanship."
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Amarillo Wednesday afternoon, October 25. Survivors include Mrs. Hays; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene H. Mills and Miss Adele Hays, both of Amarillo. Mr. Gus Hays, a brother, living in Stephenville.
