Larry Haugen

Larry Haugen, 59, Lake Benton, died Thursday, June 26, 2008 while working on his farm.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 30 at Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton, with Rev. Gary Veit officiating.

Casket bearers were Bob Redlinger, Ron Voelker, Jim Roggenbuck, Dean Shaner, John Bauer, Larry Neuberger, Steve Bennett, Darell Kahla, Mark Kroulik and Milo Downs.

Interment was in Diamond Lake Cemetery.

Larry Alan Haugen was born July 2, 1948 to Orville and Phyllis (Schultz) Haugen in Canby. He was baptized at Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby and confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church in Madison. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Madison.

He attended country school District 83 for five-and-a-half years. When the school closed, he attended Madison Public School where he graduated in 1966. He attended Willmar Junior College for two years, and then Moorhead State University, where he received his teaching degree. He began teaching at Hills-Beaver Creek. In 1974 he moved to Lake Benton and taught business classes.

He married Mary Spitzner on August 21, 1982 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James. Larry taught business and computer classes for 31 years in Lake Benton school. He operated a fur business for several years, and farmed on the side. He purchased a hobby farm in Drammen Township northwest of Lake Benton where the family enjoyed raising crops and livestock.

He retired from teaching in 2005. In April of 2008 he had a heart attack and was in recovery.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton, where he served on the church council and as an usher. He taught Sunday school when he was a member of Garfield Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary and sons, Michael and Derek, Lake Benton; his parents, Orville and Phyllis Haugen, Madison; brothers, Darrell, Madison; Ron (Cathi), Lufkin, Texas and Wayne, Madison.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom; sister-in-law Belinda "Pix" Haugen; uncles Virgil and Clarence Haugen; aunts Verna Kamrath, Milly Hanson and Lavonne Haugen; father and mother-in-law, Ron and Lucille Spitzner and brother-in-law, Jerry Spitzner.
