Elwood H. "Babe" "Brother-in-law" Manuel, 78, of Lake Charles died Tuesday, April 13, 2008 in his residence.
Mr. Manuel was born in Pine Island and was raised in Kinder and Pine Island. He was a graduate of Welsh High School. He has lived the past forty five years in Lake Charles. As a young adult, Mr. Manuel worked for American Rice Dryers in Welsh. He retired in 1990 as an operator from Basell Industries after thirty years of service. He enjoyed wood working in his wood shop and his activities as a member of the Cajun French Music Association. Mr. Manuel will be most remembered as an active, devoted, loving father, not only to his girls but to many of his neighborhood children. He was a baseball umpire, enjoying the uncountable hours on the field with the children.
Mr. Manuel was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, Monsignor Kramer's 4th Degree Knights and Our Lady Queen of Heaven's 3rd Degree Knights.
He leaves to honor his memory, his loving wife of fifty six years, Wilma Chaisson Manuel of Lake Charles; two daughters, Anna Faye Atwell and husband Thomas Dean of Henderson, TX and Christine Young and husband Aldon of Lake Charles; six granddaughters, Rebecca Barras, Sarah Whittington, Lisa Atwell, Kristen Atwell, Laura Young and Taylor Young; three great-grandsons, Dylan Barras, Daniel Barras and Bailey O'Cannon and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Rose Barras.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Lovena Manuel and two brothers, Chester and Floyd Manuel.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Odyssey Hospice for their excellence in care and compassion.
Funeral services were at 11:30 AM Friday, May 16, 2008 in St. Margaret Catholic Church. Father Derek Covert will officiated. Burial followed in Highland Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were David Manuel, Glenn Overshine, Walter Gothreaux, Ray Hurst, Jack Stegall, Darrel Chaisson, Sandy Romero, Ron Guillory and Alfred Miller.
