Samuel Doom Jr.
Samuel Doom Jr. was born Jan. 23, 1944 in Phoenix, Ariz. to Sam and Esther Doom, longtime residents of the Wickenburg and Congress area.
He attended Congress Elementary School and was a 1962 graduate of Wickenburg High School, where he was active in sports and the Honor Society. He was Class President his sophomore and senior years, and Student Body President his junior year.
Sam also was a student at NAU and Phoenix College. He joined Standard Oil Company of California (Chevron) in 1962, and retired after 24 years of service. Moving to Scottsdale, he has since been employed at Penske Auto and later, at Wal-Mart as a service manager.
Sam married Vicki Lee Moore, also of Wickenburg, on Feb. 15, 1967. Their union produced two children, Elena Marie and Samuel III, who both presently live in Scottsdale.
Sam was known for his quick wit and special sense of humor. He was always amusing and an enjoyment to be around. At an early age, he started hobbies of coin collecting and gold panning, which he continued throughout his lifetime. Wickenburg Gold Rush Days always found Sam at the gold panning arena. Another interest of Sam's was collecting Western and American Indian artifacts.
Sam passed away, unexpectedly, Dec. 24, 2002 at Paradise Valley Hospital where he had been hospitalized a day earlier. Sam leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Vicki, his daughter Elena and son Samuel III. He is also survived by four brothers: Daniel, of Wickenburg; Dennis, of Tempe, Don and Robert, of Chandler, and a sister, Lottie Lopez, also of Chandler. In addition, he had seven nephews and five nieces.
There was a viewing Friday Dec. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Hansen Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Road in Phoenix. Services were Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 3801 E. Greenway Road in Phoenix
