Myrtle Elizabeth Turner Sides Mrs. Sides, 104, of Charlotte passed away Wednesday, December 30th, 2009, at her home at Stanley Total Living Center. Born in Stanley County, NC on September 24, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Julia Caroline Thompson Turner and Jonathon Turner. She attended school in China Grove, where she later wed Ogden Oglesby Sides. In 1929, she and Mr. Sides settled in the Paw Creek community. At the time of her retirement, she was an honored employee of the City of Charlotte. In 1929, she became a member of Thrift Baptist Church - while her husband attended Thrift Methodist Church next door. At Thrift, she was a Sunday School teacher and was later a member of the TEL Sunday School class. She loved her church and attended well into her 100th year, her deep Christian faith impacting generations of people. When she could no longer go to services, she enjoyed receiving the pastor and members in her home and later at Stanley. Mrs. Sides was a noted cook, seamstress, and knitter. She was always busy with a project and willing to share her time, knowledge, and talents with others. Her great joy was her family and sharing her love of the Christmas season with them. She always looked forward to welcoming everyone home for her annual party, which she hosted until she was 101. Each year, her small home overflowed with presents, good food, a lovely tree, relatives and friends. Known for her independence, she lived on her own until 2007, at which time she moved to Stanley Total Living Center. There, she was always smiling, always busy, and always reading her Charlotte Observer. The family expresses their gratitude to the fine staff at STLC for their loving, respectful care of Miss Myrtle. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Ogden O. Sides, son John O. Sides, sister Bess Turner Hathcock, brothers Henry Turner and Carl Turner, son-in-law Herman Silvey, and daughter-in-law Jane Sides. She is survived by daughters Daphene Sides Silvey of Charlotte, Patsy Sides Smith and her husband Ken T. Smith of Hopkins, South Carolina; granddaughters Kathey Silvey Stiles (husband Walt) of Dallas, North Carolina, Grace Sides Williamson, Elizabeth Sides Lineberger (husband Terry) and Melinda Silvey, all of Charlotte, and Ann Cameron Smith of Hopkins; grandson Ken T. Smith Jr. (wife Joye) of Hopkins; great-grandsons Joshua Stiles of Belmont, Justin Stiles of Pittsboro, Taylor Smith and Logan Smith of Hopkins, and Andrew Lineberger of Charlotte; great-granddaughter Heather Patrick Sawyers (husband Eric) of Charlotte; great-great granddaughter Kenzie Sawyers; and a large extended family. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 at Thrift Baptist Church, with Reverend Gene Lathan officiating. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Thrift Baptist Church building fund, 8415 Moore's Chapel Rd., Charlotte, NC 28214. Forest Lawn Funeral Home is assisting the family.
