Wednesday, 14 September 1927

Alliance, Neb., Sept. 14 - (Special) Funeral services were held at Hemingford, Neb., yesterday afternoon for Fredolin Abley, 87, Box Butte county pioneer and a Civil War veteran, who died at Hemingford Sunday. He came to this vicinity with his family in 1886. Mr. Abley was born in Switzerland in 1840. When he was four years old he came to America with his parents and two other children. His father died during the trip and was buried at sea. The family settled in Michigan. He made a brilliant record in the Civil war. In August 1861 he enlisted in Company A, 6th Michigan infantry. He engaged in the battles of Fort Gaines, Fort Jackson, New Orleans, Fort Morgan, Baton Rouge, Mobile Bay and Spanish Fort. He was severely wounded while erecting a cannon at Fort Morgan. He was married on Dec. 5, 1867 to May Stratton and three sons were born to them, Emery, Amos and Clifford. The latter died in 1897 in Deadwood from typhoid fever. The other two survive. Mr. Abley had been an active farmer of near Hemingford and built up a very productive and well-improved farm.
