Eldest son of Homer Beeman (1803, NY – 1853, PA) and Elizabeth Williams (1806, NY – 1848, PA). After his mother's death in 1848, his father married Agnes Seidler (1808, PA), the widow of Jonathan Seidler (1795, PA – 1846, PA). Truman was a resident of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted as a private October 16, 1862, and was mustered into Company I, 169th Pennsylvania Infantry. Private Beeman was mustered out at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, July 26, 1863. His brothers, Niram Williard Beeman and John Williams Beeman, were also Civil War veterans.
