After a very long and full life, Jennie Schaap rested and went to be with her Lord and Savior. Jennie's life centered around her faith and the Hanford First Christian Reformed Church, where she was the oldest member.
Jennie was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands to parents Pieter and Christina J (Roubos) Tos, joining older brother Leonardus. The adventurous family sailed to the United States and entered through Ellis Island in 1912, Younger sister Aletta completed the family in 1914 after they had established their home in Hanford.
As mentioned earlier, Jennie's life revolved around the church. It was through the activities of the youth group that she met the handsome Corrie Schaap from Lemoore, and after a courtship they were married in October of 1937. It turned out to be a long relationship, as they recently celebrated 71 years together. Jennie enjoyed her career as homemaker, but also worked at ReMars and Cases in downtown Hanford, and Rhodes/Liberty House in Mt. View, Calif. She was very social, loved to entertain friends and family, and especially liked playing (and winning) games.
Her "children" were the children of her brother, Leo (Grace) Tos and sister, Lettie (John) Van Groningen. She lavished them with love and affection, and amazingly kept track of all their children and grandchildren.
Jennie will be dearly missed by her husband and best friend, Corrie and her sister-in-law, Grace Tos.
"Aunt Jennie" will be lovingly remembered by Leland (Vicki) Tos of Hanford, Thomas (Evelyn) Tos of Walnut Creek, Robert (Jane) Tos of Hanford, Marilyn (Richard) Maccagno of Armona, Loretta (Melvin) Mathews of Hanford, Martha (Jim) Hammond of San Jose and Chris (Ross) Dykes of Redding, their children (18), grandchildren (40) and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 13 at People's Funeral Chapel in Hanford.
Graveside Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 14 at the Grangeville Cemetery in Armona.
Celebration of Life Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m., at People's Funeral Chapel.
