Mr. Vance was born May 10, 1868, in Smith Township, near Burgettstown, the son of JOHN and MARY J. SHIPLEY VANCE, his parents being members of pioneer families of Washington County. Educated in the schools of his home section he also graduated as a mortician, and was one of the first men in the State to receive a license. He engaged in the livery and undertaking business in Canonsburg for several years as an associate of the late William H. McNary. He also engaged in the same business in Carnegie for a number of years. The family moved to Washington in 1913 and since that time Mr. Vance has been a dealer in livestock and horses and had built a reputation as being an excellent judge of horseflesh. He was one of the prime movers in the reestablishment of the Washington County Fair a few years ago and always was interested in its progress. Mr. Vance was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, of Washington. In 1892 he was married to MELISSA ELLEN GUTHERIE, of Canonsburg. She died in 1933. To that union five children were born, four of whom survive: MRS. MARY V. RUDY, East Washington, with whom Mr. Vance was making his home at the time of his death; HOWARD G. VANCE, Pittsburgh; CARL A. VANCE; for several years a Washington druggist, of Sarasota, Fla., and GLADYS, wife of M. G. PAUL, also of Sarasota. A daughter, HAZEL B. VANCE, died at the age of 13 years. Mr. Vance is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, MRS. WALTER BRICELAND, Canonsburg, and a brother, ALLISON M. VANCE, Williamsburg. Friends are being received at the Ritchie and Piatt Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in charge of Dr. W. Franklin Harkey and Dr. W. Paul Ludwig. Burial will be in Oak Spring Cemetery here.
