Caleb J. Allen, Jr., was 21 and living in Sidney, Fremont Co., Iowa, when he enlisted in Co. A of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept. 4, 1861, as a Private. He was mustered in on Nov. 23, 1861.

He was later promoted to 1st Sergeant on Feb. 3, 1863, and played an important role in the Battle of Hill's Plantation near Vicksburg on June 22, 1863. He was captured Aug 16, 1863, and was then a POW at several Confederate prison camps including the infamous Belle Island near Richmond.

Allen was exchanged in Dec. 1863, and returned to his family's home in New York where he died shortly thereafter as a result of maltreatment while a POW. His cause of death was listed as "inflammation of the brain."
