When Gilbert H. Howland was born on January 4, 1815, in Wall, New Jersey, his father, Cook, was 33 and his mother, Anna, was 32. He married Mary W. Morrell on December 20, 1836, in Howell, New Jersey. They had 11 children in 25 years. He died on July 5, 1900, in Brooklyn, New York, having lived a long life of 85 years, and was buried in Little Silver, New Jersey.

Gilbert Howland of Brooklyn, who was well known at Red Band, died of old age last Thursday, aged 85 years. A funeral service was held in Brooklyn on Saturday and another service was held at the Little Silver church on Sunday. The Body was buried in Little Silver Burying ground. Mr Howland was born at Hamilton in Wall Township. In 1835 he married Miss Mary W. Morrell of that place. For many years he was a landscape gardener at Little Silver and an active member of the Methodist Church at that place. On the death of his wife about fourteen years ago he went to Brooklyn to live with his Daughter, Mrs. Corlies Edwards. Five daughters and one son survive Mr. Howland. They are Mrs. Albert Pope and Mrs Lewis M. White of Red Bank, and Mrs. Corlies Edwards, Mrs. Annie Maurer, Mrs. William Hoover and Charles Howland of Brooklyn.
