Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on April 12, 1875 for his actions as a first sergeant with the 23td US Infantry on March 27, 1873 at Turret Peak, Arizona Territory. He enlisted as a private n the 29th Pennsylvania Volunteers, US Army in 1864, and participated in General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War. Following the war, he reenlisted in the Regular Army and was assigned to the 23rd US Infantry and served in the Western Frontier. He was part of the Lieutenant Colonel George Crook's campaign against the Apache Indians during the early 1870s. On March 27, 1873, he took part in a major engagement against the Yavapal Apaches, 20 miles south of Camp Verde, when he, along with Captain George M. Randall, led a successful surprise attack. Later that year, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the 12th US Infantry and retired in 1882 at the rank of 1st lieutenant. He died from inflammation of the bowel around the age of 47. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in action."
