Officer, Suspect Die in Gun Duel
VISALIA. Nov. 6--UPI--An exchange of gunfire between Policeman Hugh Garrison of Visalia and a man he was seeking to arrest killed both men.
Clyde Bauer of Woodlake, wounded in the duel with the officer late yesterday, died early today in Visalia City Hospital.
Garrison, struck near the heart and in the arm by bullets, died shortly after the shooting. He was 38.
Police Officer Floyd Depew and Juvenile Officer J. W. Ward who, were accompanying Garrison, said Bauer was wanted for questioning, in connection with an automobile theft.
They said Garrison told them before he died:
He shot me first.
