John Carl Joachim Holtz III was born in Hohendorf bei Wolgast, Pomerania, Prussia, to Caroline (Freese) and Christian Holtz. As a young man, he served in the navy and participated in the Second Schleswig War, also known as the German - Danish War (1864).

Carl migrated to the state of Victoria in 1869 and lived in Footscray by early 1872. He worked as a ships carpenter.

On 25 February 1872, Carl and Margaret Roberts were united in marriage at the Lutheran Church in Melbourne. Within 10 months of the marriage, Charles first child, Frederick Charles James, was born. He became the father of 9 more children, perhaps 10: Ernest Albert George, Charles William, Albert Edward Ferdinand, Herbert Didman, Alfred James, Arthus James Bismark, Pearl Daphne, Hilda May, Florence Gertrude, and possibly another son who died in infancy. In addition to the infant, five of his children died between the ages of one and 10.

Charles, who'd been employed as a shipwright, died at the age of 58 from Apoplexy. Surviviors included his wife, Margaret, sons Herbert Didman, Alfred James and Arthur James, and daughters Pearl Daphne, Hilda May and Florence Gertrude.
