He was the son of George W and Rhoda Ann (Stratton) Ellis. He married Ida Alice Bricker Dec 25, 1878. They had 8 children, 6 living, and 7 of them are listed on Ida's memorial page. Ida's obituary states they had 8 children, so one must have died in infancy as only 7 were listed in the censuses. His birth date was calculated from his age on his stone.

Charlie was murdered while working a field. There are two newspaper articles about it but I could never find any more. They state that the public generally thought he committed suicide, but I wonder why they thought that. And why the coroner couldn't decide if it was suicide, even in those days. It says he was found with a bullet hole in his back. How could he shoot himself in the back, and why would he even try to do it that way if he was trying to kill himself? It didn't say he had a hole in the front, which makes me think he didn't? And, if he didn't, I would think, no matter who killed him(Himself or someone else), that it wasn't up close or it should have traveled through? Maybe he felt overwhelmed with his kids and wanted them to have the money from his life insurance policy? He had to make it look like a murder? Maybe he had an issue with a neighbor? Who knows but God.(**update, I have found another article from several Kansas newspapers stating that neighbors say he had been shot at several times in the past. He was found with a bullet hole in his side, this paper says and from the position of the wound, murder is indicated.)

*Update- Maudie was the 8th child, probably dying between the ages of 3 to 7.

Charlie and Ida were my GG Grandparents.

Thank you so much to Janet D for finding him!
