From the Rutland Daily Herald, Feb. 15, 1901:
William Downs, of Summer street died at 2.30 o'clock yesterday morning after a brief illness with grip and pneumonia. He was born in Rutland in 1841, and was the son of Harry and Eliza Downs. He enlisted when a young man in the United States navy, and served until he was discharged because of sickness. He has since been subject to malarial attacks, and this complication hastened his death. He was a pensioner and an inmate of the state soldiers home at Bennington for some time. He left there last winter, and has since resided at the home of his sister, Mrs. E.J. Lindsley, on Summer street. He was never married. Mr. Downs is survived by Mrs. Lindsley and another sister, Miss Mary E. Downs, also of this city. The funeral, which will be private, will be held from the house at 2.30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
