Landsman Thomas Arr USN
Born a Slave on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, Jan. 1, 1839. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Thomas Arr ran away from his master Joseph M. Daniels, to Union positions at Cape Hatteras, offering valuable information about Roanoke Island. In Jan. 1862, at the request of General Ambrose Burnside, he served as personal body-servant and guide to the General. On the first day of the engagement of Roanoke Island, Arr was sent ashore in the first boat, to act as guide. He was at the front, under fire all day, until he was wounded in the left leg by a minnie ball. After his recovery, Arr remained in the service of General Burnside till 1864.
On Jan, 11, 1865, Thomas Arr enlisted in the US Navy for three years. He served on the USS Ohio, Chimo, Don and Minnesota.
