Charles Sumner Ashley is the grandchild of the Rev. John Clinton Ashley and Mary Ann Kirkpatrick of IL/OH and great grandchild of the Rev. Benjamin Ashley and Catherine Bibby of Norfolk, VA. He married Emily Linsay Bellman in 1892 and together they had four children: William Meredith, Edward M., Eleanor Meredith, and James Mansfield Ashley. Charles Sumner worked as a lawyer in Lucas County, Ohio for many years under the name "Huntsberger and Ashley" and was councel for the Toledo, Ann Arber and North Michigan railroad of which his brother, James M. Ashley II and his father, Gov James M. Ashley helped to create.
