A memorial mass for Dr. Ivan Lipman, 57, vice chairman of the department of internal medicine and chief of neurology at St. Joseph Hospital, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the hospital chapel, 2900 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Dr. Lipman died of cancer Friday in his Near North home.
A nationally known neurologist, he had been on the hospital staff since 1972. He rose to head the neurology section in 1991 and became vice chairman of the department of internal medicine the following year.
Dr. Lipman, who had written articles for clinical journals, had a private practice at 8 S. Michigan. He also held appointments at Chicago hospitals including Illinois Masonic, Ravenswood, Swedish Covenant, Grant, Columbus and at Loyola University Medical Center.
In 1993, he was appointed Fellow of the American Academy of Physicians. At the time, Dr. Serafino Garella, chairman of St. Joseph's department of medicine, said Dr. Lipman was "a compassionate and dedicated clinician, a patient, enthusiastic and effective teacher, a thoughtful and mature professional who is dedicated to our profession and to the betterment of society."
Dr. Lipman was on the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School since 1980. He was associate professor of clinical neurology.
A 1962 graduate of Northwestern University's Medical School, he interned at its Wesley Pavilion before serving as captain in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Bliss, Texas, from 1963 to 1965. He returned to Wesley after his discharge to serve his residency.
Dr. Lipman spent two years as assistant professor of neurology at the Medical College of Virginia, returning here in 1971.
Besides being president emeritus of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, he was a past president of both the Society of Clinical Neurologists and Chicago Neurology Society. His memberships included the Council of the American Academy of Neurology.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Stephanie; two sons, Matthew and Joseph; a brother, Robert, and his mother, Mary Bushnick.
