Civil War Union Army Officer. Enlisted as a Sergeant in Company C, 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Fought at the Battle of Williamsburg, and was promoted to First Sergeant of his company on June 16, 1862. Served in that capacity until the fall of 1864 (having re-enlisted on January 4, 1864). Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company C, 7th New Jersey on September 10, 1864 to replace Lieutenant Charles H. Fosselman, who has also been promoted. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company H on January 10, 1865 to replace Lieutenant Charles R. Dougherty, who had been promoted as well. Served until his muster out on July 17, 1865, serving nearly 4 full years. When he died at age 98, he was one of the last surviving officers of a New Jersey Civil War regiment.
