John Leonard Goins, 20, is the son of Pastor Nathaniel and Jacquelin Goins. He had three brothers, Marcus, Daniel, and Nathaniel III. He was a member of the Urbana Church of the Living God. He served as a deacon and was the Local Youth President, and a member of the Choir and Usher Board. He graduated from Briggs High School in 1987. He was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He served with the Police Athletic League, Special Olympics and other civic programs. He received a Good Citizenship Award. He was killed in the explosion of gun turret #2 on the USS Iowa, during training maneuvers in the Atlantic Ocean off of Puerto Rico.
