Dr. Joel DeWitt was the first son of Thomas DeWitt and Magdalene Buffington who lived in Jackson County, WV and are buried in Dewitt Cemetery, in Jackson Co, WV.

Joel's wife was Rachel Ann Mairs, daughter of Dr. Joseph Mairs and Margaret Bell who also lived in WV.

Joel was born at the Muses Bottom region along the Ohio River of Mason County, Virginia, which later became Jackson County, WV.

He served in the Civil War as a Major and Surgeon in the Union Army's Missouri Militia's 66th Regiment, Companies F & S. (Field and Staff). His total service was 286 days spread between 1863-1865. Therefore, his grave deserves a Civil War marker.

Rachel and Joel had the following children.

Mary Magdeline Margaret DeWitt (Thomas)
1843 1881

Joseph Culbertson DeWitt MD
1845 1922

Thomas Byron By DeWitt MD
1848 1904

Margaret Josephine Josie Dewitt (McCullough)
1849 1937

William Henry Webster DeWitt
1854 1927

Mark Pinkney DeWitt
1858 1937

El Nora Elnora DeWitt (Hart)
1863 1907

I am trying to find all of the graves of his children. Those that are still in need are:

Dr. Joseph Culbertson (1845 1922)
Dr. Thomas Byron (1848-1904)
(I added links below but do not know where they are buried.)

The others are shown in the links below.
