SPANISH AMERICAN WAR VETERAN
Charles Bartles, Jr. was the son of Charles and Mary E. (Bell) Bartles. He was born January 22, 1870 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He stood five foot eleven inches tall and had a ruddy complexion.
Three enlistments in the U.S. Army:
Enlisted April 27, 1898 at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Assigned to 12th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. "G". Honorably discharged November 1, 1898. Enlisted again at Williamsport on November 13, 1898 and served with 10th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. "E". Re-enlisted after honorable discharge at Fort Crook, Nebraska on November 13, 1901 with same unit. Honorably discharged as a 1st Sergeant on November 29, 1904. A pension was awarded on Certificate No. 241169.
In March 1952, Mr. Bartles was honored by Lodge No. 106, Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania, for having been a member of a Symbolic Lodge for fifty years with a Fifty Year Masonic Service Emblem.
Mr. Bartles, 82, died August 27, 1952 at the Washington Veterans' Home. He was survived by his niece, Mrs. Virginia Wood of El Rancho Madera, Arizona. Graveside services were conducted at the Washington Veterans Home Cemetery.
