Obitary Published March 23, 1907:
SAMUEL B. SMITH
Death's angel has been busy in our midst this week, the third victim being Samuel G. Smith, familiarly called "Grampa" of Manette, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. B. Williams, Wednesday morning. He was nearly 83 years of age and dearly beloved by all, who knew him, for his sterling character and sweet disposition. He and his wife came from their home in Princeton, Minnesota, about a year ago to reside with their daughter. He was an old soldier of the civil war and was buried by the G. A. R. Post, with all honors. A firing squad was sent from the Yard to fire the last salute. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. O. S. Barnum, of the Presbyterian church, he being an elder of the church at the time of his death. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. The deepest sympathy is extended the bereaved family, especially to the aged companion.
"A special thanks to Dan Vatne, Kistap County Civil War Historian, for his research on this veteran."
