Harold C. McComb, 89, of rural Bonaparte, died at Henry County Health Center.
He was born in Harrisburg township, north of Bonaparte to George Burce and Lena Belle Rockefeller McComb. On August 17, 1932, he married Mary Minerva Ellis in Delta. She died November 12, 1943. On June 12, 1947, he married Esther Stark in Traer. She died March 7, 1989.
Mr. McComb was a 1923 graduate of Bonaparte High School and a 1931 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. He did graduate work at the University of Iowa, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and St. Louis University. He taught at served as principal at New London High School and also taught at Horace Mann Junior High School in Burlington and Canisus College in Buffalo, New York.
He was a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Service from 1941 to 1970, when he retired to Mount Pleasant. He had been chief meteorologist at Columbia, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri, administrative assistant to the regional director in Kansas City and to the head of the Weather Bureau in Washington, D.C. He moved from Mount Pleasant to the family farm in Harrisburg Township and was active in the operation of the farm until his final illness.
He was a member and former elder of First Presbyterian Church, Mount Pleasant, past master of Bonaparte Lodge No. 73, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, a 32nd degree Mason, past worthy patron of Bonaparte and Columbia, Missouri chapters, Order of Eastern Star, scoutmaster of Troop 9, Boy Scouts of America in Columbia and held the Scoutmaster's Key award. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity, a past president of Harmony Community School Board, a former member of Van Buren County Farm Bureau, and Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Boards, and was active in the Republican Party. He had been a member of the Older Iowans Legislature, American Meteorological Society and American Geophysical Union, and was the recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce Meritorious Award.
Survivors include sons, Jack of Keosauqua and Craig of Madison, Wisconsin; daughter, Marilyn Watson of Hillsboro; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and sister, Helen C. White of Bonaparte.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, and one daughter-in-law.
The funeral was held at Harrisburg Baptist Church north of Bonaparte, with the Revs. Larry Mitchell and David Doerr officiating. Burial with Masonic Services by Bonaparte Lodge followed.
