For many years it was not known where George was born when his parents briefly lived in Indiana. But a Civil War era letter, and a draft registration for his father, now confirm that he was likely born near Popular Grove, Franklin Twp., in the SE corner of Marion County, Indiana.
He moved to Franklin County, Kansas with his family when an infant and later to Elk County, Kansas.
George married Kate Petty on June 3, 1888 at Little River, McPherson County, KS. She was the step-daughter of his oldest sister. He and Kate had nine children, and all lived to adulthood. George ran in the Cherokee Strip Land Run into Oklahoma in 1893, along with his father, and settled a claim between Blackwell and Newkirk in Kay County. He farmed there the rest of his life.
A large family gathering was held to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 1938. At that occasion, he surprised his wife, and family, by having a fellow who had an airplane fly in and take him and Kate on their first and only airplane ride.
