Birth: Jan. 25, 1841
Death: Jan. 4, 1884

Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company D, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 7, 1862, replacing Lieutenant Andrew J. Mutchler, who had been promoted. Served through the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, often times as an aide-de-amp to Brig. General Alfred T.A. Torbert, before being promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company B on August 30, 1863, replacing the also-promoted Lieutenant John Parker. He served at this rank for only two months before being tabbed for a Field and Staff position of the newly-raised 34th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned its Major on November 2, 1863. He subsequently served with his unit in Kentucky and Tennessee, where it was constantly shifted from post to post, sometimes dealing with roaming Confederate Cavalry and guerrillas, but often performing garrison duty far from the fighting. During the time the 34th New Jersey's Colonel, William H. Lawrence, was placed in command of the Union forces within Columbus, Kentucky, and Major Abeel led the regiment. After a year of fighting regular and irregular Confederate forces, and on the eve of the 34th New Jersey joining Union forces in Alabama, he resigned his commission on January 19, 1865. On March 13, 1865 he received the brevet promotions to Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services while on the staff of Gen. A.T.A. Torbert from October 1862 to August 1863" and Colonel, US Volunteers for "meritorious services with his regiment from November 1863 to January 1865".
